Pharrell Williams is a household name with adults and children alike dancing to his iconic works like “Happy” and “Shine”. His “ah shucks” smile instantly cements him as a favorite celeb.
But what impresses us more than his succession of 11 Grammy awards, is his ageless complexion.
The Pharell Williams Happy Music Video
In an industry that crushes the most optimistic of souls; his face shines with the youth and vigor of a freshman college student.
At 44 years old, Pharrell maintains the sex appeal of a man half his age. Combine his good looks with a 25-year music career, and you have a proven formula that puts him in league with the most legendary artists.
In his recent interview with Dazed, Williams revealed his simple, two-step process to maintaining an eternally youthful face.
- Exfoliate
For Williams, clean skin is an acknowledged obsession. “To me, the key is just exfoliating, like a monster. There’s a lot of dead skin.” He continues, “All the time. Like a narcissistic madman.”
Exfoliation on this level requires a time commitment. It is clear that for Williams, his skin’s health is as important to him as his music career.
In addition to removing dead skin cells and excess oils, consistent exfoliation encourages the skin to produce more collagen, creating a tighter, smoother look.
People with thicker, oilier skin can get away with a more aggressive exfoliation routine. This includes over the counter formulas of 2% Salicylic Acid, Mechanical scrubbers and a daily routine.
Conversely, those with drier, more sensitive skin types will experience better results with less aggressive sugar scrubs and an every-other day schedule.
Thanks to an earlier interview we know that Williams uses a Glytone cleanser which offers a gentle exfoliating benefit for his consistent practice.
- Hydrate
In addition to his daily skincare practice, Williams also credits his discipline of quality hydration for his good looks, saying “When you… you drink a lot of water, that does good for you.”
Most of us will immediately agree that we need to drink more water. After all, as many as 75% of Americans of may spend their lives chronically dehydrated
However, for Williams, hydration goes beyond just drinking more water. In a separate interview, given three years ago to US Magazine, Williams reveals that he drinks Pedialyte® almost every day.
Pedialyte® is a low-sugar electrolyte drink originally designed to promote hydration for children suffering from the flu. For Williams, it serves as the cornerstone to his hydration routine, supported by “lots of water”.
Granted, many of his fans are going to be disappointed with his simplistic answer. And, perhaps, even he is overlooking one important piece to his routine: consistency.
All of us can agree that hydration and exfoliation are essential components of a beauty routine. If Pharrell is as consistent with his beauty routine as he is with his 35+ year career, then, perhaps, it makes sense that he is seeing uncommon benefits.
The good news is that it is a simple routine and offers the potential of similar results for anyone with enough time and dedication to the process.
