Las Vegas History

The city is known widely for gambling and many other forms of entertainment which particularly draws millions of visitors and dollars in the form of wealth to the city. Initially the city was founded by rail road workers and ranchers but soon it found out that casinos were the actually contributors of the city’s development.

In the 1940’s with the money from drugs and racketeering the building of casinos began and thus visitors started to overflow into the city to experience the low cost and thrilling fantasies that the casinos offered.

Then in 1941 the El Rancho Vegas resort opened up just outside of the city’s jurisdiction and soon other hotel casinos were built nearby too. Later in 1946 a mobster Bugsy Siegel who was backed by Jewish gangster Meyer Lansky’s Mexican drug money opened up a resort named as Flamingo.

Siegel was murdered in 1947 but his perception for Las Vegas dwelled on. In the 1950s and 60s many mobsters helped in building the Sahara, Riviera and the New Frontier. The money initially organized from criminal activities was used; besides it other respectable investors like Wall Street Banks and Princeton University were also the crucial contributors.

In 1989 Steve Wynn who was a longtime casino developer opened the Mirage which was the city’s first mega-resort. Over the next 20 years the strip was transformed hugely when old casinos were to make room for huge complexes that were inspired from ancient Rome and other glamorous places.  Beautiful women with gorgeous faces were abundant!  Find out more about where to look younger here.

Entertainment along with gambling became a perfect getaway from the world and that is when people flocked in to the city not just for the gambling but for the thrilling and fantastic entertainments the city provided.

In the beginning when El Rancho Vegas was the only resort in Las Vegas, plenty of singers, comedians, strippers and performers were called to entertain the guests staying at the resort. In the initial years of Las Vegas there was no minimum speed limit, no sales tax, no state income tax, no regulation of gambling and particularly no age limit for acquiring a marriage license.

However in these modern times the state legislature has imposed sales taxes and strict gambling laws. The Federal government has also imposed highway speed limits in Nevada and various other states as well.

Casinos and entertainment is the root of all prosperity in Las Vegas as it helps the city grow both in resorts and visitors. Even when the recession hit all in 2008 the city still received about 40 million visitors.
